“The Dayspring from on high hath visited us, to give light…to guide our feet into the way of peace.” – Luke 1:78,79
As I did some research to write this post, I discovered that the Bible uses the word “dayspring” as a synonym for the word “dawn,” depending upon which translation you prefer:
“Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days; and caused the dayspring to know his place” (Job 38:12) – KJV
“Have you ever given orders to the morning, or shown the dawn its place” (Job 38:12) – NIV.
In this passage, the Lord was reminding Job that it is the Lord Who is powerful enough to control even light and time, not man!
Jesus is referred to as the dawn/light of the morning/light of the world/etc. because He shines in the darkness of this sinful world and our sinful hearts. “I have come into the world as a light, so that no one Who believes in Me should stay in darkness.” (John 12:46) “He is like the light of morning at sunrise on a cloudless morning, like the brightness after rain that brings grass from the earth.” (2 Samuel 23:4)
If we follow Him, we will live in light. “The path of the righteous is like the morning sun, shining ever brighter ’til the full light of day.” (Proverbs 4:18)
