Jesus Is The Lord Of The Sabbath.

“Just as in the autumn the earth needs to rest and renew itself, our lives need to rest and be renewed by spending quiet time in the presence of the Lord. He will calm our storms, quiet our hearts, and bring peace to our lives.” – Unknown (*quote, not Scripture)

The Lord is the One Who created the Sabbath, therefore He is the Lord of it. He created it at the very beginning of time as we know it as humans. “For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but He rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.” (Exodus 20:11) “Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you.” (Deuteronomy 5:12)

The fact that the Lord is over the Sabbathus something that is extremely important – it is repeated over and over again, even in the New Testament. “For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.” (Matthew 12:8) “So the Son of Man is Lord even if the Sabbath.” (Mark 2:28) “Then Jesus said to them, ‘The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.’ ” (Luke 6:5)

Jesus reminded us that we are to honor the Sabbath, but we are not to take it to a religious extreme. “Then He said to them, ‘The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.’ ” (Mark 2:27) Jesus even healed a man on the Sabbath, something the religious leaders of the day despised. “At once the man was cured, he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath.” (John 5:9) “But the Lord replied, ‘You hypocrites! Each of you works on the Sabbath day! Don’t you untie your ox or your donkey from its stall on the Sabbath and lead it out for water?” (Luke 13:15)
