“Nathanael declared, ‘Rabbi, You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel.’ ” – John 1:49
We are supposed to be involved in a local church – a fellowship of believers – and are told by God to follow those He has placed in leadership. However, we are always to remember that God is our Master above any human authority, so we should always see if our leaders’ teachings align with His Holy Word. If not, we must always “obey God rather than men” (Acts 5:29 excerpt).
Paul writes why obedience first and foremost to God Himself is so important: “I say this because some ungodly people have wormed their way into your churches, saying that God’s marvelous grace allows us to live immoral lives. The condemnation of such people was recorded long ago, for they have denied our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.” (Jude 1:4)
When a teacher/preacher proclaims that the grace offered in the Gospel encourages or promotes sinful behaviors and lifestyles, this teacher/preacher is in direct opposition to the teachings of God Himself. “Dear friends, if we deliberately continue sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there is no longer any sacrifice that will cover these sins.” (Hebrews 10:26) Salvation is not a license to live however you want. God still holds us to a high standard and He should be Lord of every area of our life.
