“Whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become to him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” – John 4:14
“When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, ‘Will you give me a drink?’…The Samaritan woman said to Him, ‘You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?’ (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, ‘If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked Him for a drink and He would have given you living water.’ ” (John 4:7-10) This is the context for the main verse featured in this entry.
Jesus demonstrates compassion for those usually rejected by the religious people of the day. He tells this Samaritan woman that eternal life is more important than temporary food or drink. “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?” (Matthew 6:25)
Rather than get caught up in the consumer mentality that is so pervasive in our culture, we must focus on an eternal perspective. “And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul?” (Mark 8:36) Let’s focus on eternal life in Jesus Christ!
