“Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water.” – Hebrews 10:22
Many would say that they are “cool” with Jesus, but to truly experience a relationship with Him, one must not only believe in Jesus, but also follow Jesus’ commands with their “heart, soul, mind, and strength” (Matthew 22:37, Luke 10:27, and of course Deuteronomy 6:5). As the above passage indicates, a relationship with Jesus and His Father must include cleansing from sin, assurance of our faith, and purity of body (this includes the mind and heart!). Jesus is mine, yes, but I am also His, and as a child of God, I must seek to follow Him in my thoughts, words, and actions. It’s not enough to have Jesus as your “homeboy” – Jesus must be the Lord of every area of your life. When you begin a relationship with Him, you must surrender all, and keep surrendering all, for the rest of your lief. None of us are perfect, but the overall attitude of our heart is what determines the depth of our relationship with Jesus. “I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine” (Song of Solomon 6:3).
